Navigating mCDR permitting and regulations
One significant challenge faced by organizations working on climate solutions and marine carbon dioxide removal is navigating the permitting process and regulatory requirements. Climate companies need to navigate local, state, and federal regulations. They must work with federal agencies like the EPA and comply with regulations like the Marine Protection, Research, and Sanctuaries Act (MPRSA). Whether you are looking ahead to your initial pilot, or planning a large-scale solution, it is critical to have guidance around these vital regulations so that projects can proceed responsibly and efficiently.
At Oceanid Climate and Carbon Solutions, we recognize these challenges. Our team is here to help organizations proceed and succeed with their climate solutions by offering our expertise in carbon accounting, MRV, and ecosystem impact assessment. We are excited to be able to expand our service offering to include expertise, guidance, and advisory services, specifically tailored to help organizations navigate project permitting and regulatory challenges.
We are especially pleased to welcome Wil Burns to the Oceanid team. Wil is a Founding Co-Director of the Institute for Responsible Carbon Removal at American University’s School of International Service (SIS) in Washington, DC - a research center that focuses on law policy and ethics issues in the realm of carbon dioxide removal. He is also the Associate Director of the Environmental Policy and Culture Program at Northwestern University. He has taught at a number of other universities, including Johns Hopkins University, where he served as the Director of the Energy Policy & Climate Program, the University of Chicago, Stanford University, and the University of California-Berkeley. He holds a Ph.D. in international law from the University of Wales-Cardiff School of Law.
Wil has written extensively on governance and regulation issues associated with carbon dioxide removal approaches. Moreover, he has consulted with international treaty regimes engaged in the regulation of CDR options and engages regularly with domestic regulatory authorities. He has also consulted with numerous CDR startup companies on regulatory and governance issues. He also coordinates the annual Carbon Dioxide Removal Law and Policy conference.
We are honored to be working with Wil, are pleased to be able to offer his wealth of experience to our customers and engagement partners, and look forward to working together on responsible, diligent, and absolutely vital climate solutions.
